There seems to be a common thread through many recent crimes that isn't discussed. Here the emphasis has been on whether Henry Nowack had been "racist" or not. That is, no doubt, an important question. But what hits me is WHY there was an argument between these two young men. Go back to that screenshot from the local paper. I want to know more about that. I want detail of that video. WHY were two young men videoing each other? WHY were they taunting each other?
With "Jack the Ripper" everyone has spent nearly 140 years asking "WHO?" Almost no-one has asked "WHY?" I have a theory about that and I have a theory in this case too. Different groups of people place different levels of importance on different attitudes. For JtR those women were just working class women. Probably prostitutes. They didn't matter. They were disposable. Nobody would miss them. But people did.
The thing I keep seeing in so many crimes today is that whatever the victim did in the first place, the perpetrator's response is "you disrespected me". The entire motive seems to be revenge for holding a different attitude. And that gets people killed. It's a cultural thing. It's about hierarchy. Sometimes the cultural difference is ethnic, or religious, or class-related, or gender-related.
We have spent so long telling certain groups that they are "oppressed" and that you should fight against your "oppressor" that we're killing each other for it. It seems to me that what used to be the sort of behaviour only exhibited by warlords and gangsters now is expressed as "you were nasty to me so it must be because you disrespect my identity". And some people feel that gives them the right to take whatever action they deem fit. It is rights without responsibilities.
Maybe he just thought you were a pratt. And maybe you were. Not a black pratt. Not a gay pratt. Not a Sikh pratt or a Muslim pratt or a Zoroastrian pratt or a Christian pratt. Just a human one.
